Sea-view hotels in Saint-Malo: the Sillon seafront

The Sillon is the only seafront in Saint-Malo where the hotels face the open sea head-on: three kilometres of promenade-dyke exposed to the north-west, an immense beach at low tide, and rooms from which you can follow the flood from breakfast until dark. On big-coefficient days with swell, this is where — and nowhere else — the waves come over the wall.

What staying on the seafront actually changes

Sleeping on the Sillon means you stop chasing the tide: it passes beneath your windows twice a day, including at hours when nobody goes out. The five a.m. high water, for instance, is best watched from bed. For the rest, the old town is a quarter of an hour away along the promenade and the station ten minutes.

Choosing the right room

Three things to check before the star rating:

Position on the dyke. Near the ramparts (Éventail beach) the waves are at their most spectacular in heavy weather. Towards Rochebonne and Paramé the dyke calms down, and so do the prices.

Floor and orientation. A “sea view” on the first floor behind the promenade has little in common with the same view from the fourth. The words to look for when booking: “sea-facing”, “full sea view”, “balcony”.

The dates. The same room is a different experience — and a different bill — at coefficient 75 or 104. For the March and September equinoxes, book several months out. The table below details each address’s tide advantage; the booking module targets the next spring tide.

The nights the sea leaps the wall

Watch it from your room, or from a distance, behind shelter. Not from the dyke: people are injured there every year, sometimes fatally, going for a photo close to the spray. A sea-facing room is also the safest seat in the house.
